About the Social Service Sector
The social service sector provides services for the well-being of people, especially the disadvantaged, helping them deal with life challenges. Currently, NCSS has about 400 member agencies offering a total of 1,800 social service programmes. The manpower in the sector has grown an average of 1-3% annually to support these programmes. Today, we have a total of about 9,3001 social service professionals who are serving the different groups of people in need.
Four Key Social Service Causes
  • Helping People with Disabilities Lead Independent Lives
    • Teach and impart skills for independent daily living

  • Dignifying the Lives of the Elderly
    • By 2030, the elderly will constitute 19% of total population or one elderly in every five persons

  • Nurturing Children to Succeed
    • Helping children with disabilities cope with the challenges of growing up, studies, friends and stressful family conditions

  • Keeping Families Together
    • Overcoming problems from single-parenting, low income, mental distress and illness, suicidal tendencies, aftercare of ex-prisoners convicts, drug addicts

There are diverse needs that the social service sector attends to, and opportunities are available to work with children, youth and families, people with disabilities and the elderly. Professions in demand in the sector include social workers, therapists, psychologists, special education teachers, social service assistants and administrative personnel.
