Standard Chartered Bank

Educating the public about key health issues is one of the pertinent initiatives under the Standard Chartered Bank’s community programmes.
Since 2003, the Standard Chartered Bank employees have been volunteering their time to educate the community about HIV/AIDS through an interactive programme called ‘Living with HIV’. So far, the programme has reached more than 35,000 people in Singapore. This programme has also been adapted to educate youths aged between 15 and 18 years. In July 2007, the programme was extended to small and medium enterprises to raise awareness in the workplace. To date, 200 man-hours have been invested to train more than 100 SME relationship managers in the Bank to promote the cause. The programme resulted in the Health Promotion Board’s adoption of the Bank’s programme for its own HIV/AIDS training programme.
‘Seeing is Believing’ is another of Standard Chartered Bank’s community programme. This global community fundraising initiative aims to raise awareness of blindness and restoration of eyesight. Since 2004, the Standard Chartered Bank has raised almost $500,000 for this programme which aims to impact the lives of 10 million people in 20 countries.
The Standard Chartered Marathon (2002-2008) which garnered huge public support annually, is also used as a platform to raise funds for the ST School Pocket Money Fund, Breast Cancer Foundation, Autism Association, and the Community Chest. Over $1.2 million has been raised for these causes since 2002.
Besides high profile projects, staff of Standard Chartered Bank have also been volunteering at and fundraising for several VWOs, such as the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS), Patient Care Centre, and Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH).
Standard Chartered Bank’s spirit of volunteering and serving is imbued in their culture and is practised by employees of all levels, including their senior management team. In 2006, the bank formalised their volunteering activity with a corporate responsibility programme. Each employee is given two days of leave each year for voluntary work and employees who demonstrate outstanding performance are further rewarded with 5 additional days.
The Standard Chartered Bank’s sustained efforts in delivering innovative and high profile community service projects, and rewarding staff with significant leave entitlement for performing volunteer work, have won them the President’s Social Service Award (Corporate Category).
