PSSA 2005 - Corporate Category Award Winner

NTUC FairPrice Co-operative Limited

No stranger to community involvement, the NTUC FairPrice Co-operative Ltd lives by the motto “We Serve, We Care, We Share”. Be it towards children and youth, the elderly or others in need, FairPrice’s contribution has been impressive.

Since FairPrice adopted Club Rainbow in 2002, it has organised many outings for these children with chronic & life threatening illnesses and assisted in their fund-raising activities. The company has also invited less privileged children and their families from various VWOs to attend FairPrice-sponsored shows like Barney, Winnie The Pooh, and Disney on Ice shows.

One of its longest standing projects is the annual Used Textbooks Project. Since 1983, it has distributed more than 1.35 million books, helping over 100,000 students gain a better education. The success of the project has prompted FairPrice to now include used uniforms and school bags. Since 1985, FairPrice has also contributed over $5.5 million for study grants and scholarships to deserving students.

The elderly have also benefited from the thoughtful initiatives undertaken by FairPrice. Elderly Singaporeans who may no longer be employable are provided with a 2% discount scheme that FairPrice launched in 2002.

In August 2004, the company launched the FairPrice Care & Share Charity Fund where it pledged to contribute one cent for every house brand and weekly offer item sold, with the overall aim of raising $1million for Community Chest.

A model for many organisations to emulate, NTUC FairPrice introduced the Family/Charity Leave in 2003, where every staff is allowed two days of paid leave to spend quality time with their family members while performing voluntary work together. This programme became so popular that it prompted FairPrice employees to organise themselves and start a club called “Club V” to promote volunteerism. Since then, Club V has organised and participated in many community and fund-raising projects.
