PSSA 2004 - Individual Category Award Winner

Mr Foo Say Thye

As a stockbroker and father of two young children, Mr Foo Say Thye, 37, has his hands quite full already. That is why his dedication and passion in serving the elderly community for the past nine years have been most inspiring for his peer volunteers.

Back in 1995, he joined Sree Narayana Mission Home for the Aged Sick as a volunteer and since then, he had gone beyond the call of duty to actively assume leadership roles and participate in numerous activities. As volunteer committee member, his enthusiasm and dedication has inspired many new volunteers and spearheaded outreach programmes. For example, he led the volunteer group to extend home-help services such as befriending and meals delivery to the elderly staying alone at homes in Yishun and Marsiling areas.

In 1999, Mr Foo extended his volunteering activities to National Council of Social Service (NCSS) Volunteer Initiator Persons as a volunteer leader to recruit members of the public as volunteers and is a key committee member in planning and organising events.

He then went on to play an important role in the launch of the NCSS Volunteer Circle and even undertook the responsibility in recruiting member volunteers by giving presentations to voluntary welfare organisations.

With a willingness to learn and take on new challenges, he recently joined the Very Special Arts and is currently involved in a project known as TheatreSports - where he is undergoing training by professional theatre practitioners in the conduct of theatre games for the disabled.

His volunteering portfolio extends beyond the social service sector as he has committed time into being a volunteer guide for the Fabric of the Nation at Toa Payoh HDB Hub.

The number of projects on his palate bears a strong witness to his commitment to volunteering. It is no wonder that he views the volunteering activities as a part of his life and would feel awkward should he miss any activity. He has even involved his family in such activities, as a way to spend quality time together and to nurture the volunteering spirit in his young children.
