PSSA 2002 -
Individual Category Award Winner Dr
Wong Meng Ee
Dr
Wong Meng Ee started losing his sight at the age of 10. In spite of that, he had
continued with his studies and eventually graduated with a Ph.D. in Sociology
from the University of Cambridge.
Dr
Wong has devoted much time and effort, particularly over the last five years,
to raise awareness of the less fortunate in our community, and as a fund-raiser
for various charities including the Parkway Healthcare Foundation and the Singapore
Sports Council for the Disabled. He has also presented public talks on disability-related
issues such as "The Future of Disability Sports in Singapore" at the
Disability Sports Seminar 2001. Above all, Dr Wong is a dedicated volunteer, companion
and counsellor to many elderly and disabled persons. From
1999 to February this year, he helped develop and found the Retinitis Pigmentosa
Society, Singapore. Currently, he is involved in a fund-raising and public awareness
project known as the Blind Cow Restaurant Project 2002 under the Singapore Association
of the Visually Handicapped for the visually impaired community. On
the sporting front, Dr Wong has received many accolades as a representative of
Singapore in various international sporting meets. He last represented Singapore
at the recent Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Dr
Wong has demonstrated that visual impairment is not an impediment to nation building
and contribution to Singapore. Besides his involvement in various organisations
and societies, he also chairs the Accessibility Consultative Focus Group of the
Remaking Singapore Committee. Recognised
for his unwavering commitment to raising the awareness of the less fortunate in
our community and in raising much-needed funds for charitable organisations, Dr
Wong is indeed an excellent role model for all Singaporeans.
