PSSA 2002 -
Corporate Category Award Winner GlaxoSmithKline
GlaxoSmithKline's
volunteer programme started in August 1986 when a dedicated group of 16 staff
came together to form a Community Relations Committee (CRC).
Charities
and organisations which have benefited from its strong community involvement efforts
include the Singapore Leprosy Relief Association (SILRA), the Singapore Spastic
Children's Association (SCAS) and the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped
(SAVH). Since its adoption of SILRA Home
in 1997, the company organises outings, durian feasts and also sponsors the annual
Chinese New Year celebration of the home. This year, the staff added a more personal
touch to the Lunar New Year festivities by preparing and serving the feast themselves. GlaxoSmithKline's
involvement with SCAS began in 1996, and many projects, such as the Match a Millennium
Wish and a Christmas Fair in 2001 had been initiated. Besides sponsoring SCAS'
annual sports day, the staff also organise and run the school's sports meet. The
company also believes in helping others help themselves, and this has also proven
to be a hit with the staff. They enjoy, on a monthly basis, the services of SAVH
masseurs after an initial trial in February proved to be overwhelmingly successful.
The massage services were incorporated into the STAYWELL programme, the company's
way of taking care of staff well-being. GlaxoSmithKline
firmly believes in contributing to the community through staff involvement, and
much of their budget for community projects is meant to support staff in their
volunteering efforts. In addition, staff also involve their families and friends
in the company's volunteering activities. With a supportive management, GlaxoSmithKline
has developed a very special recipe to satisfy the less fortunate in the community.
