PSSA 2001 -
Corporate Category Award Winner HSBC
HSBC
has consistently been supporting charitable causes through staff participation
and fund-raising events. It has in the past few years, stepped up philanthropic
efforts to enrich beneficiary lives through "care and companionship".
Following
six months of careful planning and research, the HSBC’s Care-for-Community Programme
was launched in 1997. This provided its employees with an organised staff-driven
platform to contribute their time and skills to voluntary causes. At least twice
a month, HSBC staff volunteers provide support and relief services such as befriender
and reachout activities, meal delivery for the poor and the elderly, enrichment
classes for disadvantaged children, and cleaning and repair work for voluntary
welfare organisations. HSBC
has also put in place a formal structure within the organisation to manage the
recruitment, deployment and motivation of staff volunteers. For example, all new
volunteers are presented a volunteer welcome pack, and paired with more experienced
volunteers who act as buddies. Outstanding
individual volunteers who have participated in more than 10 activities and projects
are recognised and presented with a watch as a symbol of the time they have put
in. Another award presented is the Special Project Award in which the most innovative
and creative volunteer project is chosen. These outstanding volunteers are given
the privilege of choosing the VWOs they would like the Bank to give charitable
donations to. To
date, HSBC’s volunteer base has significantly increased to 700. The
HSBC Care-for-Community Programme is an example of a holistic approach in harnessing
resources to actively engage in corporate community involvement. Other
