The Community Chest….

Our beginnings

Founded in 1983, the Community Chest was created to tap the generosity of individuals, companies and institutions to fund voluntary welfare programmes intended to help disadvantaged people in Singapore.

With Singapore's changing demographics and the harsh social and economic pressures of the modern world impinging on our society, the demand for both structured and voluntary social services has grown exponentially.

Today, there are over 200 Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs) in Singapore. They have each developed programmes and projects to help a significant number of disadvantaged people in our community. They all need more financial aid.

For Financial Year 2008/9, Community Chest needs to raise $52 million to fund 147 social service programmes and help more than 310,000 people in need*.

The new look

Times are tough, but we see it as a challenge to find more money. The number of programmes and projects to be funded has grown in response to the specific new needs of disadvantaged groups and for enhancing the delivery of services and refining standards.

To meet the new challenges, Community Chest has been transformed from being a mere conduit for public largesse to being an activist on behalf of those who need help. Community Chest has created a unique agenda to motivate, educate and involve all sections of the community in a dynamic partnership of sharing, concern and care.

Called New Visions, New Challenges it is driven by the message, It's in your hands.

To sharpen this call to all sections of the community to intervene creatively and selflessly to help the less fortunate, ComChest has also created a new visual image with which people can identify more easily.

Aspects of the new vision are reflected in the re-designed logo. Its vibrant orange palette, its softer font simulating handwriting, and the rainbow effect, all combine to evoke images of warmth, security, reaching out - the essence of Community Chest and its philosophy.
